Somaliland was an independent country recognised by Britain and the rest of the world. On the 1st July 1960 Somaliland decided to join Somalia becoming the Somali Republic.

Going back to 1980 in Somaliland

In the late 1980s, Somaliland began a concerted attempt to break away from Somalia under the brutal dictatorial rule of the Somali president Siad Barre.

Aerial Attack

In response, the Somali air force began a large-scale aerial bombardment which destroyed over 99 per cent of the city.

Thousands of deaths

A large-scale military operation occurred which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Somalilanders.

Declaring  Independence

In 1991 the Somali government collapsed and a civil war broke out in Somalia.


On the 18th of May 1991, Somaliland declared independence from Somalia.


To this day No country on planet Earth recognises Somaliland's Right to Independence.


Somaliland is a peaceful country which hosts Many Restaurants and hotels.


The capital Hargeisa hosts a Museum as well as a war memorial- a Somali fighter jet that was captured whilst bombing the city.
